WIC Program

What is the WIC Program

Whether you are pregnant or have already given birth to a child, you may be qualified to enroll for a program that offers you some benefits. It is known as the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). It has assisted in the cost and success rate of pregnancies and also targets young children who are under the age of five and to the women who are breastfeeding.

You may feel overwhelmed overthinking about what to do for a child. You suddenly have another life that is in your hands. How this child will grow is your responsibility and that’s a lot of pressure to carry on your shoulders.

Feeding the wrong food to the infant can cause negative side effects to its health easily. Many women have huge discussions and debates on how to raise their children since everyone has been raised differently. This difference in opinion may cause a lot of confusion which is why this program is a great option that will save you a ton of stress.

The education that comes with the program will incorporate a professional collection of data that will guide you in the right direction in feeding your child and yourself the right nutrients to lower the risk of any incidents from happening in the process of pregnancy and birth.

This includes showing you the importance of each food, the benefits of breastfeeding or a certain amount of time, and supplying you with the finance to buy the list of groceries that is recommended.

Benefits

Education about nutrition is offered that consists of breastfeeding and the proper development of a child. It has been proven that the program has made a difference in the children’s diet and has reduced the incidents of giving birth and iron deficiencies.

You will be sent checks to buy healthy meals that will meet the needs of the child’s development and get help for finding related services and communities.

A list of the food included are:

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Dairy products
  • Whole grains

There are also referrals involved, where counseling is available if any drug abuse is involved. Immunization will also be encouraged to you because of the risks involved from the absence of vaccines.

WIC Program Requirements

Of course for this type of aid, you have to meet certain requirements to receive the support. There are several conditions that meet this. One is that you should apply while you’re dealing with pregnancy, which also applies after giving birth but there is a deadline of six weeks.

This includes women who are going through postpartum. The time limit extends to 6 months after birth. For infants, the availability is up until the 12th month while for children it is up to their fifth birthday.

You must be a resident at the location you apply to. Fortunately, even new residents still qualify in this condition. When it comes to financial conditions, you will only be considered if you make low income.

People who enroll must seek a professional to claim that they are at risk nutritionally meaning that your body is suffering from poor conditions or diseases that affect you severely in your daily tasks.

How to Apply

If you are interested in applying to the program, the first thing you must do is to contact the U.S. Department of agriculture. You can find their contact number on their Food and Nutrition Service page by clicking here.

Once you arrive at the page, scroll down to where it says explore where there should be two boxes under it asking for you to select the state and the programs. After you’re done choosing your location, the program should automatically have “Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Woman, Infants, and Children” as default. If not, click the box and you should see it right under the “Show All” option.

After you click the program, the page should refresh and you will see an updated list under the boxes. The list will contain the WIC office location and the director’s contact information. Once you contact the location, they will be able to provide all the information you need when it comes to your qualifications meeting the requirements and the benefits specified for your situation.

Depending on your situation, you may receive more funds. Either way, education for nutrition is not exclusive to a certain event. This program will make sure that you and your child will have a safe transition in the progress.
