Supplemental Security Income

What is Supplemental Security Income?

The SSI is a federal benefits program that was started in 1974 to aid the elderly who were blind or disabled. It is run by the U.S. Social Security Administration and delivers monthly cash to those in need. This was designed to replace the other federal-state programs that attempted to achieve the same goal but left a lot to be desired, as it caused more trouble rather than help. What started as a relief program for elders has become a way to help the underprivileged.

Some people were ineligible to get their own social security while some could not live off the benefits they received from social security. It has proven to have made a positive impact through the number of Americans it has assisted. Over eight million Americans have benefited from this program.

Benefits of the SSI

Those accepted will be given payment on the first day of the month with the exception if it is counted as a holiday or weekend. In most states, you are automatically qualified for Medicaid with the possibility of receiving food stamps.

The amount of funds you receive each month entirely depends on if you have any other source of income. In order to acquire the maximum benefit, you should be absent from any source that would otherwise be able to improve sustainability.

How to Know if You’re Eligible

You must be at the required age to be considered being enlisted in the program. The minimum age is 65 years or older. Another requirement is that you have to be impaired physically or mentally.

How to Apply

To begin the application for Supplemental Security Income online, you must first have a “my Social Security account”. If you do not wish to apply online, please call 1-800-772-1213. If you are deaf or have a speech impairment, please call 1-800-325-0778.

To apply for the Social Security account, visit this website: https://secure.ssa.gov/RIL/SiView.action. This link will take you to a page that is for signing in or creating a new Social Security account. To proceed with the application, click “Create New Account”. You must have:

  • An email address
  • Social Security Number
  • Be the age of 18 years or older
  • Have a mailing address in the U.S.

The account you are creating must be for personal use only. It is strictly forbidden to sign up for another person even if they give you permission to do so. Sharing your account with another person is prohibited, so you are not allowed to go on a friend’s or partner’s account.

The information is restricted to each individual only as it is sensitive. There will be penalties involved if you were to put any false information. Make sure to keep your information safe to avoid any misuse of your identity. Social Security does not take responsibility for what happens if your data is misused whether it’s due to your carelessness or other circumstances.

What they will do with your information is to confirm that your identity isn’t forged. They use a system known as the Identify Service Provide in which they do not share your social security number and your personal information will only be stored there temporarily. In order to obey the law, the data cannot be stored in their system permanently.

People will no longer receive a physical Social Security Statement by mail. Once you’ve created your exclusive Social Security account, you will be sent an email around three months before your birthday to remind you to review your account online.

If you prefer to get your statement through mail, you must print out and complete a “Request For Social Security Statement”. Once you’re done, mail it to the address that’s included in the form. You should receive a statement in your mail in no less than a month.

Take into consideration that physical mail will take longer. If you were to use your online Social Security account instead, you’ll be able to view and download the statement on your own time. Your account will always have the most accurate and up-to-date information.

After you review all of this, click and check the box that says “I agree to the Terms of Service”, and hit the Next button. It will take you to the next page which will contain all the questions asking you to input all your information to create your Social Security account.

Once you have your Social Security account, you can proceed with applying for the Supplemental Security Income benefits by clicking here. Check the box that says “I understand and agree to the above statements” and hit next.

Now you should see an “Apply & Complete” section. Click “Start a New Application” and follow the instructions provided to you and you’ll be on your way to applying for the benefits.
